Germ cells have long been known to contain ‘granules’ that are characterised by germ cell-defining factors, such as for instance Vasa. The function(s) of what we now know are cytoplasmic condensates can be manifold and in many cases are unclear. We study germ granules in light of small RNA pathways and use our knowledge about small RNA pathways to study how these granules can function.
