Multiple positions in the Lab for Synthetic Macromolecular Assemblies

Website georgeluphd George Lu Lab @ Rice University

The Lab for Synthetic Macromolecular Assemblies (PI: George Lu) at the Rice Bioengineering Department has multiple openings for postdoctoral fellows. The lab employs protein engineering and synthetic biology methods and aims to develop novel technologies for noninvasive imaging and remote control of cells for both basic research and cell-based therapies. The research takes advantage of our proximity to the country’s biggest medical center and opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists in areas such as cancer immunotherapy. Rice Bioengineering is one of the top biomedical engineering departments with its graduate program consistently ranked among the top 10 in the country. The candidate will have opportunities to lead cutting-edge research projects and interact with outstanding scientists as collaborators and trainees. Please refer to the lab website for more information http://lulab.rice.edu.

Postdoctoral Fellows:
We are actively seeking talented and motivated postdoctoral fellows to join our multidisciplinary group. Candidates with experience and interest in the following fields are particularly encouraged to apply: chemical biology, computational protein design, synthetic biology, and ultrasound imaging. Specific job advertisements can be found in the links below, but we also highly encourage candidates with other backgrounds to contact Dr. Lu and apply. Decisions will be made on the overall quality of the candidate, not the skill sets.

The ideal candidate for the first position will have a strong background and interest in computational protein design and structure calculation. Experimental skills in protein structure determination will be considered as a bonus but not essential. The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills, and will also be expected to aid in the supervision of junior lab members and in the preparation of research proposals. The application for postdoctoral fellowships will be encouraged, including both external and internal ones such as Rice University Academy of Fellows. (https://jobs.rice.edu/postings/23642)

The ideal candidate for the second position will have a strong background and interest in either one of the two fields: (1) chemical biology, organic synthesis and reaction kinetics, and (2) ultrasound imaging and instrumentation. The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills, and will also be expected to aid in the supervision of junior lab members and in the preparation of research proposals. The application for postdoctoral fellowships will be encouraged, including both external and internal ones such as Rice University Academy of Fellows.

Graduate Students:
We are looking for talented and passionate graduate students who are interested in a variety of projects on protein engineering, computational biology, chemical biology, and immunoengineering. Current and incoming Rice graduate students are encouraged to email Dr. Lu to set up discussions, and summer early matriculation before the Fall semester are welcomed.

Prospective graduate students are highly encouraged to apply for the following programs at Rice: (1) The Bioengineering Department offers PhD and Master programs that are ranked among the top 10 in the coutry. (2) The Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology (SSPB) at Rice is an elite graduate program aiming to train the next-generation scientists interested in engineering biological systems. (3) The Applied Physics program offers a very unique and truly multidisciplinary graduate education.

Undergraduate Students:
We usually have multiple openings for undergraduates interested in joining the lab. Please feel free to email your inquiries to Dr. Lu (george.lu@rice.edu).
