Postdoctoral Fellow

Johns Hopkins Univeristy

Several NIH and DoD-funded postdoctoral positions are available in the Danfeng Cai lab at Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, starting immediately. http://www.cai-lab.net

The Cai lab strives to understand how transcription process is dynamically regulated in normal and cancer cells. We have discovered that Yes-associated protein (YAP), a transcription coactivator and important oncoprotein, forms liquid-like condensates in the nucleus to activate transcription (Cai et al, Nature Cell Biology 2019). Our result is consistent with an emerging view of how transcription machinery is organized in the nucleus, as a dynamic compartment formed by weak interactions, capable of providing force to remodel chromatin structure. We will continue to investigate the pathways regulating biomolecular condensate formation, and how these condensates influence local chromatin structure and transcriptional activity to influence cancer progression.

The postdoctoral fellow(s) will work in a highly collaborative team, be trained in cutting edge microscopy techniques, including super-resolution/ single-molecule imaging, molecular and cell biological techniques, and advanced proteomics to tackle the important questions in biomolecular condensates in cancer.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health provides an outstanding environment for postdoctoral training. It is the first School of Public Health in the nation. Our colleagues include world-class public health researchers and basic scientists. Hopkins is home to outstanding cancer biology laboratories, biophysics laboratories, and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. There are abundant opportunities for collaboration with these and other groups at Hopkins, and at neighboring institutions.

Requirements:

A doctoral degree (Ph.D. and/or M.D.) in the biological sciences and expertise in cell biology, transcription, cancer biology, phase separation biology or a related field, is required. Having protein purification skills or bioinformatics training is a plus. Candidates must have a record of scientific productivity (first author publication in PhD), collegial attitude, strong work ethic, and excellent communication and technical skills.
